About Dr Carla Thackrah
While Carla has had a comprehensive classical music training, she performs an eclectic mix of styles from free improvisation, baroque music, orchestral playing to world music.
She has 20 years full-time professional orchestral experience, for ten years of that as a principal flute with the Opera Australia Orchestra, based at the Sydney Opera House. She has performed as guest principal with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO), West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) , the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (AS0). She has also performed with contemporary and world music ensembles including David Ahern’s A-Z Music, the Lindsey Kemp Contemporary Dance Co., Seymour Group, Tango Paradiso, Doyna, Tucana Flute Ensemble, Elektra Collective Unconscious (ECU).
She undertook a BMus at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, postgraduate studies at the London Guildhall School of Music, and baroque flute studies at the Royal College of Music, London. She has a Masters in Music from Queensland University of Technology and a Doctorate from the University of Technology Sydney. She has taught both music and filmmaking at the Queensland University of Technology.
She continues to perform regularly at festivals and concerts around Australia in various ensembles and as soloist.
Carla is also a multi-award winning film maker and film composer.
Her film production company - See Tea Productions - specialises in the making of arts documentaries and creating music and sound for film. She has been awarded and nominated for many national prizes for her films and music.
As well, Carla completed a psychology degree at the University of Sydney, and her Doctorate from the University of Technology Sydney spans across the disciplines of music, film, visual arts and psychology.
Carla has a special interest in Argentine tango. She has travelled regularly to Argentina to study and perform both the music and dance. As a dancer, she performs and teaches Argentine tango, and as a musician she is the co-founder of one of Australiaʼs leading tango orchestras - ʻTango Paradisoʼ
